Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn at Massachusetts. The parents of her were Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Her father was a carnival barker, was killed as a young little girl. This forced her mother to support the family by working as a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth was raised in the poor Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She attended school in Boston. She only attended school for a couple of years, then leaving to pursue her acting career. The path she chose was filled with difficulties. After landing a gig as a model in New York as a model for a detective magazine, she had a difficult time trying to secure opportunities on stage. After that, she was the hat checker in a night club before calling it quits and returning to Boston. There she made a buck working as an usherette during the day, and at night was a part of the New England Repertory Company. It was her first acting job. She was a drama student at The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
